2018 Goal - To Draw!

One of my goals is to one day illustrate my own picture books. To break that huge goal down into somewhat manageable chunks, I know I have to first learn how to draw. I use to draw a bit when I was a kid, but mainly comics, and I never had any training besides the drawing segment of your basic art class in grade school.

One thing I learned in 2017, is that drawing is a teachable skill. I always thought it was pure talent but have since learned that with a LOT of practice, anyone can learn to draw. Many people who think they can't draw have not taken the time to learn the skill nor put in the hours of practice. I knew there were some fundamental things I was missing because all of the illustrators that I follow on social media were doing some of the same basic steps when they showed their rough sketches (using lines and shapes). So this year, I'm working on learning those steps.

I decided to take a beginner's online drawing course to learn the fundamentals of drawing in an attempt to realize my overall goal - to one day draw my own picture book.

Here is my first rough sketch of Raffi. I am using an iPad Pro and the SketchBook app.
